From the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet:

I-65 North and South Lane Closures Beginning Friday, September 29, in Bullitt County
Crews to perform concrete slab repairs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of lane closures on Interstate 65 North and South beginning Friday, September 29, in Bullitt County.
The right two lanes on I-65 North from mile marker 121 (Exit 121/Brooks Road) to mile marker 123, and the right two lanes on I-65 South from mile marker 117 (Exit 117/Mt. Washington/Shepherdsville) to mile marker 116 will be closed beginning Friday, September 29, at 7 p.m.
The lane closures will continue through Sunday, October 1, at 2 p.m., as crews perform concrete slab repairs. The weekend lane closures are necessary to allow ample time for the concrete to cure. Motorists should obey restrictions and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
Due to ongoing construction for the I-65 roadway rehabilitation project between mile marker 104.7 and mile marker 110.7, motorists should plan for increased travel times and seek an alternate route by using navigation apps like Waze.

Fall Fire Hazard Season begins Sunday October 1. For those counties in Kentucky where open burning is allowed, such as Bullitt, burning within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland area is allowed only in the evening hours between 6 pm and 6 am during Fire Hazard Season.

We have what is called “abnormally dry conditions”. This means outdoor fires can start easier and burn faster. There is rain in the forecast, and we have our fingers crossed for a good soaking rain.

Conditions this year are like 2022. We experienced an increase in outdoor fires, and some were quite large, requiring numerous fire departments to extinguish.

Here are some tips we would like to share:

Please be extra careful with disposal of smoking materials. Carelessly discarded materials can cause roadside fires or mulch fires in commercial areas.

• Campfires and other outdoor fires need to be at least 25 feet away from any structure and anything that can burn.
• Clear away dry leaves and sticks, overhanging low branches and shrubs.
• Avoid burning on windy, dry days. It is easier for open burning to spread out of control when it is windy and dry.
• Watch children while the fire is burning. Never let children or pets play or stand too close to the fire.
• Attend to the campfire at all times. A campfire left alone for only a few minutes can grow into a
• damaging fire.
• Keep a campfire small which is easier to control.
• Never use gasoline or other flammable or combustible liquids.
• Always have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby to put out the fire. Make sure to put it completely out before leaving the site.
• If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll. Stop, drop to the ground and cover your face with your hands. Roll over and over, or back and forth until the fire is out.
• Treat a burn right away. Cool the burn with cool water for 3 to 5 minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth.

(These come from the National Fire Protection Association.)

Our next major community project will be our Halloween visits. This time next month, we will bring teams together at the fire station to fill treat bags with candy.

In years past, many community members have dropped off bags of candy at the fire station to add to the supply. Also, businesses and other organizations have made financial contributions to purchase candy. We very much appreciate the kindness and consideration!

If you or your group/business would like to help, we would be most appreciative. You can stop by station one at 5328 North Preston Highway. Deputy Chief Key is coordinating the candy supply and can be reached at 502-955-8076 ext. 107.

We will post schedules of when we will be in what areas around the middle of October.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I can’t wait to do this again!

Cub Scouts from Pack 20 would love to help fill bags again. Just let us know when. The Scouts really enjoy getting up close to the trucks and meeting everyone. It’s a great learning experience for them as well by serving others.

Kids so enjoy this!🍬🍭

I will be bringing mine, please post when you are starting to collect the candy, ♥️♥️

Your great for doing this for kiddos!

Monday evening many Bullitt County fire departments came together at the Shepherdsville Fire training facility for a live burn exercise. These departments were Zoneton, Shepherdsville, Lebanon Junction, Nichols, Southeast Bullitt along with Fairdale. (Fairdale is a part of the "mutual aid system".)

Mutual aid trainings like these are very valuable as most any fire of significance requires the services of multiple fire departments.

Meanwhile, back at Zoneton, there was a recruit/junior firefighter training class on personal protective equipment along with hand tools carried on fire apparatus. These folks were lucky as there was pizza at the end of the class :-).
