We "stole" this excellent video from another source. It helps answer the question whether or not to close bedroom door.

Best answer: have smoke detectors in all sleeping rooms AND adjacent hallways. Leave doors CLOSED to limit fire/smoke spread. Got little kids you want to monitor - there are excellent intercom devices for that.

Firefighter Dusten Howten presented an excellent training Monday evening on Fire Dynamics/Fire Physics. Some excellent "Take-aways" for both firefighters and the public:

There are four stages to a fire:

Incipient - Where the fire is in its early stages and confined to the object of origin. There is time for occupants to escape.

Growth Stage - The fire continues to grow and heat the surrounding and and objects. Depending on the contents and room configuration, this may last some three (3) minutes. Escape time is very minimal.

Fully Developed (Flashover) - All of the room contents seem to begin burning. Again content and configuration dependent, this can happen in 3-5 minutes. Occupant fire survival becomes unlikely.

Decay - The fuel for the fire has been consumed, the oxygen concentration has depleted or the heat energy is reduced by the application of water from fire hoses. The fire begins to go out. For the oxygen/ventilation dependent fire, any new supply of oxygen can result in a violent explosion of fire. (This is commonly called a "Backdraft". There is no chance of occupant survival.

With the time for survival being so minimal, we push having working smoke detectors and a plan to evacuate immediately.
