Zoneton Fire Protection District

This coming Saturday, January 16, will be the 14th anniversary of what is known as the “Brooks Train Derailment”. At about 8:45 AM, 26 cars of an 80 car train derailed south of the Brooks Crossing.

This incident resulted in 52 injuries - 2 were emergency responders, all of which were classified as minor. There was $22.4 million in property loss. Around 500 people were evacuated from their homes due to a release of flammable materials and ensuing fires. They were displaced for about 5 days. An 8 mile stretch of Interstate 65 was closed for nearly 11 hours.

Zoneton firefighters along with those from numerous area fire departments were on the scene for the next 6 days. There was a multitude of local, state and federal emergency officials on the scene.

We were and still are, very blessed to have an excellent working relationship with the responding agencies as well as CSX. This helped to bring the incident to as swift of a resolution as possible.

I lived in Hillview, remember it well...

Was a day that I can never forget!

I remember that. Like yesterday

Wow I can’t believe it’s been 14 yes ago.

I remember that day! :(

Oh I remember this well🤗

You could still smell the chemicals years later when driving though there, even with the windows up and air recirculating. Half my family lives all around there

Remember It well!Thank you firefighters! 🙈🐵🙊🙉

Great trained Fire personnel and a great leader.

Saw the smoke plume from Louisville

I remember well! Lived up on Brooks Hill at the time and I had to leave work early to pick my son up from Brooks Elementary. Luckily we lived far enough away to not have to evacuate, but did receive a little compensation. The pictures don't begin to do it justice. Could see the smoke as soon as I got on the highway in downtown Louisville heading south to pick up my son.

I remember that day saw the smoke as it came up

It was unreal.

It was awful my mom and dad lost their home eventually her life

That's a day ill never forget. Happened in my first year at EMS.

What a crazy day that was?

My mother in law and father in law were displassed for months! Thank you to to fire department for all they did in the weeks that followed

Still smells like Frito lays out there

The whole area smelled like broccoli and cheese for months. A buddy was living down there with his girlfriend at the time and he developed weird respiratory issues that went away when he stopped going out there

I know a lot of CSX guys in Louisville ky wonderful people

Saw the smoke from space

One of the farms we leased was about 100 yards away. They stored the rail cars across the street for years.
